Representation for Individuals Serving Lengthy Sentences in Colorado

Colorado abolished the death penalty in 2020, but thousands of incarcerated people in Colorado are serving death-in-prison sentences. Sentencing someone to die in prison sends the same message as the death penalty—that a person is beyond all redemption or mercy. Yet no one can predict at the time a sentence is imposed what a person will be like decades later. Many people serving long sentences have transformed, and their continued incarceration no longer serves its original purpose. We provide direct representation to individuals serving life or virtual life sentences of 40 years or greater in the State of Colorado who are seeking sentence reductions or release from prison.
